Therapy for young people in the Adelaide Hills

“If your life were a book, and you were the author, how would you want your story to go?”

— Amy Purdy

Moving into adulthood is one of the most intense and difficult times of life; you couldn’t pay me enough money to redo those years. There are expectations on you to know what you want to do with your future, to behave responsibly, and act like an adult, while still being treated like a child and not having much power over your own life. The social pressures and judgement you feel all around you can make it hard to breathe sometimes. Add to this the intensity of emotion that’s often mistaken for ‘melodrama’ but can be painful and overwhelming for you. There is passion, energy and power in these years and that’s why I’ve chosen to prioritise work with young people. These are challenging years because this is when you get to start writing your own story, I can provide you with the tools and supportive space to do this.

My Approach

Stories underpin my work and my life in general; I have a passion for sci-fi, fantasy, reading, gaming and geek culture. The rich stories that underpin these subcultures can teach us life skills, help us challenge limiting beliefs and engage with life in a way that is passionate and meaningful. Stories are how we make sense of our world and we can use them to explore different parts of our identity. Therapy will not eliminate the difficult times, but I will take the time to get to know your interests and your stories, and we can use them to help you feel more in control of your life. I draw on therapies like ACT, interpersonal therapy, and DBT which have a strong focus on what you value and how you want your life to be.

How it works

- Step One -

You can fill out the contact form yourself or with a parent. If you can give me some details about what you are wanting help with it will help me know if we are likely to be a good fit.

- Step Two -

I will contact you back in case either of us would like to ask more questions. Then we can set up a time to meet in my office at Oakbank.

- Step Three -

At our first session you might want to jump right in and get started. Or you might need some time to figure out what you want to talk about and if I’m the right therapist for you. We will generally meet fortnightly but how often and for how long depends on what you want to work on, and how busy your life is.
